Who we are

The Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners (SPMDP) was formed in 1968. It grew from a small group of practitioners in Kumasi, who saw the need for private practitioners to come together to discuss and look after their needs and started meeting regularly, to about 500 members today who still meet regularly to discuss issues of interest to the Practitioners and the Society.

  • To ensure that Private Medical and Dental Practitioners in the country uphold the Hippocratic Oath
  • To promote good health amongst all people, through participation in the development and maintenance of the highest possible stands of healthcare delivery in Ghana
  • To promote the welfare and interaction of the members of the Society
  • To maintain the honor, dignity, ethics and professionalism of the medical and dental objectives
  • To cooperate with organizations worldwide which have similar aims and objectives
  • To consider and express views on all proposed legislations and national issues especially those affecting health care delivery system and medical and dental education in Ghana
  • To promote the role of private and medical practice as one of the most important points in primary healthcare delivery

The Society shall have a hierarchical structure with clearly defined functions and relationships as follows:
  • General Assembly: shall be the highest decision making body
  • National Executive Council: hereinafter referred to as “the council” shall be responsible and derive its powers from the General Assembly
  • Regions: Members of the Society shall be grouped into Regions which shall be responsible to the Council and subsequently to the General Assembly.
  • Committee: The Society shall have committees and sub-committees to facilitate its work at the various levels
  • National Secretariat: the headquarters of the Society shall be situated in Accra.

Any private medical or dental practitioner duly registered with the medical and dental Council, Ghana or any statutory body responsible at the time for the registration of Medical and Dental practitioners in Ghana shall have a right of membership of the Society on payment of the annual dues. Each member shall pay to the Society such dues an fulfil such other obligations as shall be prescribed by the Society A member is deemed to be in good standing if such a member has discharged all financial and other obligations as mandated by the Society

The governing body of the Society shall be the National Executive Council which shall consist of the following members:
  • National President
  • National Vice President
  • Immediate Past President
  • National Secretary
  • Assistant National Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Regional Representatives i.e Regional Chairman and Regional Secretary of every Region
  • The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of PAGLAS (PENSION AND GROUP LIFE ASSURANCE SCHEME)
  • Editor in-Chief
  • Annual General Meeting. The General Assembly shall meet once a year at the Annual General Meeting
  • Council shall determine the date, venue an time which shall be at least ten months and not more than fourteen months from the date of the last Annual General Meeting
  • Council shall determine the agenda for the Annual General Meeting in line with the provisions of the Constitution.
  • At least two months notice shall be given by Council to members to meeting
  • The Annual General Meeting shall schedule as part of the General Assembly of the Society
  • Any region desiring to submit a resolution for considering at the Annual General Meeting may do so by sending it in writing to the General Secretary at least twenty-one (21) days before the day
